When talented author and friend, Sloane Taylor asked me to try one of the recipes in her new cookbook, Date Night Dinners, I was happy to dig in! Sloane is a fantastic cook and her passion for food and cooking is only matched by her passion for writing fun and sexy romance. I enjoyed all of the wonderful selections in Date Night Dinners and finally settled on a side dish that I'd been wanting to try for a long time. Homemade applesauce. I love applesauce with pork and just about anything really. But the store-bought kind is way too sweet for me. I loved the fresh taste of Sloane's applesauce recipe and I'll definitely make it again.

Since I try to limit my sugar intake, I cut the amount of sugar in the recipe by a quarter cup and substituted coconut sugar for white sugar. The result was a fresh tasting treat with a slight caramel apple flavor from the coconut sugar. Very delicious!

This recipe is easy to make and doesn't require any ingredients you wouldn't normally have on hand so it's the kind of thing you can make on the spur of the moment to round out a delicious meal.

I took Sloane's advice and made it with all different apples and that gave me a rich, well-rounded flavor I might not have gotten if I'd used all the same apples.

I can't wait to try some of the other great selections in Date Night Dinners!

  1. You make a good point about the amount of sugar in store-bought applesauce. Homemade is always better because you can make the changes that you want for your family!

  2. Thank you, Sam, for the terrific comments. You are a sweetheart. 🙂
